WALKING
For hill walkers,
Glen Trool, the Galloway hills and Southern Upland Way provide
a variety
of challenge together with wonderful scenery. There are mapped
and signposted paths in and around the Machars peninsula. Galloway
Forest Park has well made paths of varying
lengths and levels of exertion, for walking, cycling or horse-riding.
CYCLING
The quiet roads of The Machars provide probably the best
cycling you will experience in a very long time and an ideal way to explore
our natural treasures. South Scotland’s 7Stanes project
is an exciting development of seven centres for mountain biking. The
nearby Galloway Forest Park at Kirroughtree is one of these, is of world class and provides extensive biking on a variety of skill level tracks.
Cycle hire is available. .
We have an indoor lockable facility for bicycles.
GOLF
There are some 30 exceptional golf courses in the region. A dozen
of these are within comfortable reach of our cottages, including
three of the “Tiger Trail” courses.
Gateway
to Golf Passes: 3- and
6-round passes can be obtained at local Tourist Information Centres or
e-mail: info@dgtb.visitscotland.com;
online: www.dumfriesandgalloway.co.uk/golf
Visitors to our cottages can
obtain a £3.00 discount from green fees at Newton Stewart Golf Club.
COUNTRY SPORTS
The rivers Cree and
Bladnoch and the Palnure Burn provide good salmon and sea-trout
sport. Trout and coarse fishing is abundantly available from lochs
and rivers in the area. Sea fishing can also be enjoyed from nearby
Isle of Whithorn and Garlieston.
SHOOTING
Silver Fox Clay Pigeon - Whithorn
Outdoor Centre Glenluce - Clay pigeon, paintball and more
BIRD WATCHING
The
Wigtown Bay Local Nature Reserve is the largest local reserve in
the UK. It has internationally and nationally important numbers
of wildfowl, in particular some 7000 pink-footed geese in March/April.
A wetland habitat has been created by the local wildfowling club
in co-operation with local and national authorities which is increasing
the numbers of nesting birds. A bird hide has been built overlooking this site.

Perhaps the most exciting
of all the developments is the siting of video cameras on the Galloway ospreys’ nest.
This can be viewed during spring and summer in the Nature Reserve
Interpretation Centre in Wigtown County Buildings.
There is also a camera scanning the wetlands and part of the inks.
At most times of the
year, but particularly in late Autumn through to Spring, many varieties
of birds visit the area. These together with the native birds
make the area a rewarding one for bird watchers.
HISTORY
The area is rich in Scotland’s history with many standing stones, stone circles and chambered cairns, as well as old churches and castles. The earliest Christian activity
is recorded as
starting at Whithorn with St Ninian at about AD 397.
ASTRONOMY
The dark skies of this area have been found to be ideal for astronomy, with a thriving local astronomical society. The recent announcement to declare the Galloway Forest Park as a “Dark Sky Park” emphasises this quality of our environment.
